    A brief study on bronze casting techniques in ancient China

    An entirely new approach to bronze casting in China was introduced by the discovery in the late twenties of this century at Hsiao-tun and other places in the neighborhood of An-yang.In the resent 70 years,Shang-Zhou bronze casting techniques have been widely known all over the world.Through studying casting techniques in ancient China,now we get a preliminary outline about China Bronze Age. "Clay Mold Casting" was a main bronze casting method at China Bronze Age.There were several important techniques such as "Direct Casting", "Separate Casting", "Welding Casting", "United Clay Mold" and "Model Stamp".Clay mould techniques had been developed deeply and used widely in ancient China. "Stone Mold Casting" was an original bronze casting method which had more limitation and had been uaed for a long time.It was Eastern Zhou Peri od that "Lost Wax Casting" and "Metal(iron or bronze)Mold Casting" appeared. "Lost Wax Casting" and "Metal Mold Casting" were two breakthroughs in casting technique in ancient China.Specially, "Iron Mold Casting" gave the possibility to manufacture mass tools.Meanwhile,it accelerated the historical progress that the Iron Age took the place of the Bronze Age in ancient China.The breakthroughs of casting techniques became one of the most important and active factors to stimulate China forword.
